What’s interesting about Minecraft is that it’s an open world game. There’s no predetermined goals, required levels, or fixed storylines. That rewards open-ended exploration and requires fairly general skills and a wide range of learning. It also requires some level of motivation to explore and seek out new tasks, which the researchers provided by generating a “curriculum” via GPT-4 focused on discovery.
As Voyager learned new things, its developers stored capabilities in a “skill library” via a program also generated by GPT-4.Put it all together with an iterative prompting mechanism that is self-correcting, and the researchers achieved significant capabilities compared to previous software agents that did not use GPT-4.
“Compared with baselines, Voyager unlocks the wooden level 15.3x faster , the stone level 8.5x faster, the iron level 6.4x faster, and Voyager is the only one to unlock the diamond level of the tech tree,” the researchers report. Voyager also successfully learns on truly new tasks, successfully crafting diamond pickaxes, golden swords, lava buckets, and compasses without previous training or knowledge.
