Star Wars’ Grand Admiral Thrawn return ignores the First Order and risks creating an inconsistency between the Mandoverse and The Force Awakens.
Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return in Ahsoka breaks the sequels’ First Order storyline and makes the Star Wars timeline confusing. Thrawn was created by Timothy Zahn for Heir to the Empire, a story set shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi as part of the Expanded Star Wars Universe. Heir to the Empire, as well as all the other Expanded Universe Star Wars stories, were labeled as Legends – non-canon properties – after Disney acquired Lucasfilm.
Moff Gideon Represented The Worst Of The Old Empire Moff Gideon was introduced in The Mandalorian season 1 as a warlord trying to retain his power after the fall of the Empire. The Mandalorian season 2 suggested that Gideon had bigger plans than simply controlling territories, though, as he was involved in some sort of cloning project. Finally, The Mandalorian season 3 revealed that Gideon was creating clones of himself with the final goal of making those clones Force-sensitive.
Star Wars Has Positioned Grand Admiral Thrawn As The "Heir To The Empire" As The Mandalorian’s timeline advances, it gets closer to the events of the Star Wars sequels. Of course, there are around 25 years between The Mandalorian season 3 and The Force Awakens. Still, going by what the Star Wars sequels established, the Empire was essentially gone after Return of the Jedi and an equally big threat would only come to be with the First Order.
