A special grand jury will meet Monday in Akron to determine whether charges will be filed against eight police officers who fatally shot Jayland Walker last summer.
, which are expected to be similar to those that took place in the days following Walker’s death.
A spokesperson for Yost said he expects prosecutors to need a full week to present evidence to the Summit County grand jury. “We are in the same position as all of our residents right now in that we just have no idea what’s going to come from the grand jury decisions,” she said. “There could be any number of indictments or none. We are really just trying to do our best effort to prepare in the event of any sort of outcome that might come from that grand jury decision.”
Marsh said the city administrators have made an effort to meet with community members, including business owners, residents and activists, to provide information on the grand jury process. The city has planned two meetings for this week: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Polish American Club, 472 E Glenwood Ave., and 6 p.m. Thursday at the Goodyear Branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 Goodyear Blvd.
Walker’s cousin, Demetrius Travis Sr., said he believes “the community will come together and express their frustration” but does not know of any planned protests.“I have no faith in the justice system,” he said. “I don’t expect the right thing to be done, so I’m not anticipating the outcome because I already know it.”
