Sen. Richard Shelby is retiring after 36 years in the Senate and a career in which he has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the Rocket City to fund a long list of federal projects.
The future is not necessarily a joyous place to look for Huntsville knowing that Shelby won’t be in it. He is retiring, of course, after 36 years in the Senate and a career in which he has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the Rocket City to fund a long list of federal projects.
The speech itself was typical Shelby – lasting about nine minutes, less than half as long as most politicians at these types of events – and then he answered a handful of submitted questions from the audience. “He has been working hard,” Shelby said of Tuberville. “He’s on the Armed Services Committee. I’ve traveled with him. I think he’s going to do very well.”
“Inflation has been running close to 10%,” Shelby said. “That means last year’s military budget has probably already lost 10%. We’ve got to plus that up to keep up and we need a little more than that to show the world that we’re serious about our commitments in the world.”
