Heard on the Street: The push for greener roads is already hitting the car industry, but investors shouldn’t forget that heavy trucks are also big polluters
The passenger-car industry offers a sobering early example of what happens to investors when regulators get serious about the environment. And heavy-duty trucks may be heading toward the same scrutiny.
In the U.S., roughly 17% of the carbon dioxide and other so-called greenhouse gases that most scientists link to global warming comes from cars and light trucks, according to 2017 data, the latest available. In Europe, their share is almost 20%.
