The 42-year-old cinematographer, killed Oct. 21 during an on-set shooting in New Mexico, was memorialized during an emotional event at IATSE Local 80 headquarters in Burbank.
Speakers at the vigil included Rebecca Rhine, national executive director of Local 600; John Lindley, president of Local 600; Stephen Lighthill, a director of photography who mentored Hutchins at AFI; Mike Miller, vp of IATSE; and Emelia Mendieta, a close personal friend and fellow cinematographer.
As for himself, Lindley said that he did not know her personally but he’s come to learn through conversations with friends, family, AFI teachers and colleagues, that Hutchins was “beloved, respected, talented and loving.” He recognized that doing so is a tall order and said that “no matter what we ever learn about this, it will never make sense.”
He said Hutchins’ death serves as a reminder that “our fight to protect the safety of ourselves and our coworkers is never over.” He the encouraged the opening of dialogue about functional guns on sets. “There is no place for weapons that can kill on a motion picture set. Rubber guns are totally acceptable now and can be made to look as real as they need to.”
She continued by saying that Hutchins’ relentless pursuit of her dreams and her ambitions were “unlike anything else.”
