"I think as a female, it's important to foreground the producer stuff. But I feel like I've just done that," Grimes tells Beats 1.jumped on FaceTime with Apple Music’s Beats 1 host Zane Lowe on Thursday to discuss her brand-new track “Violence” with i_o and how she’s letting go of the producer reins to come into her role as a singer more.
“I hit i_o up and we made this song up in an hour. And then I was just like, ‘This must go on the album because it just feels good,’” she told Lowe. “And, you know what, you know what? It's just fresh.” She’s exploring a fresh take on her artistry, one that swerves a little bit away from the producing role she usually embodies, and embracing her vocals more. But it hasn’t been the easiest transition, she revealed. “And I feel like for the first time, I'm really seeing myself as a singer, which is something I've never really done before, and it actually feels really good to just sing,” Grimes said.
She continued: “Because I've always just been so pushing that part of myself away because I've been like, ‘I'm a producer first.’ I think as a female, it's important to foreground the producer stuff. But I feel like I've just done that. And also, besides, i_o produced the rest of this album so it's like... I feel like I've just earned my 10 minutes to just sit around and sing.
