Grit carries gahannafootball to win over NewAlbanyFB, historic regional title
Two middle school-aged Gahanna Lincoln football fans stood next to each other on the turf Nov. 18 at Historic Crew Stadium, slightly apart from the throngs of cheerleaders and players who were assembling to receive the program’s first regional championship trophy in 40 years.“Watch this,” a nearby fan said to the pair, both of whom were wearing Lions jerseys among other layers of clothing in 25-degree weather that felt like less with a slight wind chill. “This could be you some day.
“It’s been amazing. We needed our time to shine and right now is our time,” said King, a junior. “We kept losing, losing and losing and then this class of ’23 came together. We are really shining as a whole. We’re letting Ohio know that we’re a top-tier team.Gahanna went 3-7 in 2019, when the current seniors were freshmen. A 4-4 season followed in 2020, then 7-3, and now 13-1 and counting.
The postseason doesn’t work quite like it did the last time the Lions got this far, which they have done only twice. Six years earlier, Gahanna shut out Lakewood St. Edward 28-0 in a Class AAA semifinal before running into powerful Moeller, led by eventual Notre Dame coach Gerry Faust, and losing 43-5.
