Human Rights Campaign pointed to more than 525 bills issued in U.S. states seeking to curb the rights of LGBTQ citizens, with more than 220 targeting transgender people. More than 70 have become law, the group says.
The group specifically targets Florida, saying that Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running for president, has “weaponized his position as a lawmaker to target LGBTQ+ families, Black and brown Floridians, immigrants and private businesses.”
Florida has passed several bills in recent months that target gay and transgender issues, including bills on gender-transition treatments, bathroom use and keeping children out of drag shows,. The state’s Board of Education recently approved a ban on classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades, according to ABC News.
“The assault on freedom is not limited to one state but permeates across America,” Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, said in a statement. “The erosion of civil liberties by extremists to further their own political ambitions poses a direct threat to the health and safety of LGBTQ individuals.”” as part of its emergency declaration, which includes a section on how to identify “friendly” states.
“There is an imminent threat to the health and safety of millions of LGBTQ+ people and families, who are living every day in uncertainty and fear,” Robinson said in a statement. “Our number one priority will always be ensuring that LGBTQ+ people are safe and have the tools they need to defend and protect themselves against acts of hostility, discrimination and — in the most extreme cases — violence.
