“I was fortunate enough to get that at-bat because Yordan hustled down the line,” Bregman said. “He plays the game hard.” With catcher Martín Maldonado, who was hit by a pitch to start the third inning, on third and Alvarez on first with the two outs, Severino started Bregman with two 96-mph fastballs. Bregman fouled off the first and took the second for a ball.
Bregman hit .259 in the regular season but steadily improved as summer turned to fall, and is hitting .318 in the five postseason games so far, including two home runs. His two-run shot in the eighth inning of the Astros’ 8-7 comeback victory over the Mariners in Game 1 of the ALDS helped set the table for Alvarez’s game-winning three-run blast in the ninth.
