clinched the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics individual all-around competition earlier this morning, following a nail-biting final. The silver went to the Brazilian Rebeca Andrade—winning the first-ever medal for a Brazilian gymnast at the Olympics—and the bronze to Angelina Melnikova of Russia.
With her win, Lee is both continuing a streak and making history. For five consecutive Olympics, Team USA has taken home the gold in the women’s individual all-around, a trend started by Carly Patterson in 2004 and continued by Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas, and Biles. But Lee is also the first Hmong American to win a medal at the Games. Her family was watching from her hometown of St. Paul, asLee shines on the uneven bars.
