The term Mawozo is Haitian Creole for someone who comes from the countryside. It is sometimes used as a synonym for uncouth or a simpleton. The term reflects the gang’s roots stealing cattle in the surrounding countryside. The gang’s leader, Wilson Joseph, goes by the nickname Lanmò 100 JOU, which roughly means, “One never knows when death arrives,” according to Mr. Jean.
