Harris County may boost budgets for district attorney, sheriff's offices
Harris County Commissioners Court in session with Commissioners Jack Cagle and Tom Ramsey absent, Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, in Houston.Harris County Commissioners Court on Tuesday could boost funding for county departments by around $12 million, three months after aof the proposed supplemental appropriations would go to law enforcement, including the sheriff's office and the district attorney's office.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey and former Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle skipped six court meetings to deny the quorum, citing inflation as a reason to set a lower tax rate, while also calling for budget increases for law enforcement. Democrats argued the GOP strategy accomplished the opposite by eliminating planned increases for law enforcement.
Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman and Precinct 5 Constable Ted Heap, who publicly supported the GOP commissioners' quorum break, lost $2.8 million and $1.8 million respectively. The district attorney's office could receive $4.3 million to restore 30 assistant district attorney positions and cover a"deficit caused by unbudgeted raises," according to the Office of Management and Budget.
