A dedication ceremony will take place this weekend in Harrisburg.
The city of Harrisburg is renaming two corners in the city "Rev. Billy Gray Way." A dedication ceremony is planned for 2 p.m. April 22.A ceremony on Saturday in Harrisburg will honor the late Reverend Dr. William Gray, an activist who was known for his larger-than-life personality.
Gray, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 84, was a World War II veteran, Golden Globe boxing champion and water safety instructor for the old Camp Curtin YMCA on Forster Street. He also was an activist and community organizer during the Civil Rights Movement and marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“He was the sharpest dressed Black man in Harrisburg,” said Jerry Williams, one of Gray’s friends. “It did not matter where he was going; he was always donned with a derby. You never saw Billy in down clothes.” “We still had to sit in the back of the bus. Billy embraced that. He helped us get into school. He solicited people throughout town to give us a chance at jobs. He opened those doors for Black youth in Harrisburg,” he added.
