'We're trying to give people what they so desperately need,' police Commissioner Thomas Carter said.

The update from city officials Friday came after they got some criticism about their initial announcement Thursday that residents had one week to leave with all their belongings and find a new place to live. The deadline is the end of the day Thurs., Jan. 19.

“I know it was a surprise yesterday. We’ve gotten a lot of negative criticism,” Mayor Wanda Williams said at a follow-up press conference Friday. “[But] we’re faced with a lot of illegal activities down there, as well as safety and health hazards.” When asked for specific crime statistics to support the city’s contention that an increase in crime was also a reason for the evacuation, city spokesman Matt Maisel on Friday said police were called to the area under the Mulberry Street bridge 16 times since Nov. 1, 2022.

“We had drug overdose deaths, we had a homicide, assaults, prostitution, and everything else,” Harrisburg police Commissioner Thomas Carter said. “There’s no crime for a person to be homeless. This is a need we see that the mayor, myself and everybody else has talked about for years. Some want [the help] and others don’t, but we’re trying to give people what they so desperately need.”

“The Mulberry Street situation became one of a lot of lawlessness,” Maisel said. “We have no reason to think the same thing wouldn’t happen again.”
