The Harry Potter chronology may be more confusing than you think - so when does it all take place?

J.K. Rowling's magical novels became one of Hollywood's biggest franchises throughout the 2000s with a simple timeline of eight movies, each set one year apart.
Harry Potter Movies In Chronological Order While the Harry Potter movies share the same basic chronological order as release order, the timeline within the films themselves do include some flashbacks. There is also some debate over whether the movies are intended to be set in the same years as the books , or if they take place later in time.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban The third film in the series is the most complicated in terms of timeline, as it features the Time Turner, and two distinct timelines - the original timeline, and then a second, when Harry and Hermione use the magical device to go back and start their night again. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban also introduces one of the most important people in Harry's life: Sirius Black.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince While not the final film in the series, this is the final film that is centered on a school year at Hogwarts, and includes multiple flashbacks, as Dumbledore finally tells Harry most of what he knows about Voldemort and the Horcruxes.
