Prosecutors have dismissed hate crime charges initially filed against a 19-year-old man who was accused of ripping down Pride flags at the home of a gay Sandy teenager whom police said had been assaulted by another teen.

Although suspect’s lawyer had said that the 19-year-old was 150 miles away from Sandy when the crime occurred, prosecutors did not specify why the charges were dismissed. The charges were dismissed without prejudice, meaning they could be refiled at a later date. The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name defendants unless they have been charged with a crime.
