Two privately operated shelters, both run by PAWS Shelter of Central Texas, are located in Kyle and Dripping Springs, and they often accept intakes from the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter., due partly to an explosion in the human population in Hays County and also due to a culture that doesn’t emphasize people’s spaying and neutering their pets.
Team Shelter issued a report suggesting about $2 million in improvements to the current San Marcos shelter, as well as a brand-new, centrally located county shelter. Team Shelter’s founder, veterinarian Sara Pizano, also recommended ordinance changes for Hays County and the cities of San Marcos, Kyle and Buda to encourage a whole new approach to animal care.
“There wasn’t much of a concern about live outcome rates, health, enrichment, things like that,” she said. It would cost an estimated $2.2 million to renovate the existing San Marcos shelter, according to the report.
