&pizza CEO and co-founder, Michael Lastoria, reveals how he uses social media to help his business thrive while helping people in the process.

Michael Lastoria is an entrepreneur who is devoted to focusing on people over money. He pays a fair wage, promotes from within and looks for ways to help wherever he can. A co-founder of the creative agency, JWALK, he used his passion and creativity to become the man behind the build your own oblong pizza. As CEO and Co-Founder of &pizza, which now has 36 locations throughout the East Coast, Lastoria champions his employees .

That commitment to others extends outside the Tribe. Last December when the government shut down, impacting close to a million people, &pizza quickly offered furloughed federal employees free pizza. “It was the right thing to do,” says Lastoria. “Activism is in our DNA. We are part of a community and feel a responsibility to look after one another, so we gave out 30,000 pizzas.”

&pizza continues to grow. On July 10th, the newest &pizza shop opens on Wall Street in the heart of the financial district.Jeryl Brunner: Can you share how you created the &pizza concept?I have always loved entrepreneurship. I have always loved pizza. And I have always loved the power of coming together over a common good. Moreover, the restaurant industry was super interesting to me as I saw so many things that were broken .

The advantage of social media is that it allows us to capitalize on moments like this. So we did. We didn't have to overthink it. We let our people do what felt authentic. It is not just about jumping into a conversation to take advantage of a moment, but finding the right way to do it. We weren't the center of the story, but we had fun playing our part in it, letting the 'Pizza Intern' shine. The whole adventure was a perfect confluence of happenstance and opportunity.

This is our 4th year celebrating Pi Day with weddings. Each year, the virality of the concept grows. This year alone we saw several hundred media hits, with impressions in the billions, and social media lit up. We know it resonates because it’s a true representation of the brand. We get to show our commitment to unity, community and have a little fun with it too. People love love… and pizza.
