Durm's decades of service were honored with a large public viewing Sunday at the Scottish Rite Cathedral downtown and a public funeral Monday at the basketball arena.Stepping to the podium, John Durm, Jr., his eldest son, “winged it,” the way he said his father would have, and spoke briefly of the deputy's boundless kindness and vivacity. The life of the party, their dad was known to show up to work with donuts to share.
The deputy's tragic end is, Sheriff Kerry Forestal said, “a poignant reminder that the work of our police officers is not merely a profession, it is a calling.”"Let us channel our grief into a renewed determination to create safer neighborhoods and to continue to build bridges between communities and law enforcement," Forestal said."Let us recommit ourselves to a future where officers return home safely at the end of a shift.
