The suspects, identified as Devon Erickson, 18, and Alec McKinney, a juvenile, were scheduled to be formally charged Friday. The shooting unfolded Tuesday at STEM School Highlands Ranch. The hearing was continued until Wednesday at the request of the prosecutors and attorneys for the pair, according to a court spokesman.
Details of the shooting remain scant. Student witnesses said Erickson opened fire in his British literature class. Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old who was on the school’s robotics team, lunged toward his classmate and was fatally wounded, classmates said. Another student, who is training to be a Marine, also rushed the gunman. In the end, eight students were wounded. McKinney also fired a weapon — but it’s unclear where in the school it was fired.
The shooting stunned this Denver suburb, which lies not far from Littleton, where the shooting at Columbine High in 1999 horrified the nation and led to dramatic increases in security measures at schools. The community was already on edge, having just marked the two-decade anniversary of that tragedy.
