Wednesday's supercharged House debate was both historic and predictable, deeply partisan and decidedly democratic, with Democrats and Republicans allotted equal time to denounce and defend the president's actions.
“I have descended into the belly of the beast,” Rep. Clay Higgins declared ominously. “I have witnessed the terror within.” He described House Democrats as a rogue band of “socialists” conspiring to overthrow President Donald J. Trump.
The actions in question: Trump pressured Ukraine's president to investigate a 2020 campaign rival and a debunked theory that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 election. For Democrats, that amounts to soliciting foreign interference in an American election, and they charge Trump then impeded Congress’ investigation into his activities – leaving them no choice but to pursue impeachment.
Both sides name-dropped historical figures, including Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Paine, Abigail Adams and even Pontius Pilate, to support their arguments for or against impeachment.what kind of government the delegates had created."A republic, if you can keep it,” he answered.
As the high-minded House debate unfolded, the president raged on social media from the White House. He tweeted and re-tweeted. He resorted to all capital letters to convey his fury. “What a beautiful day … A beautiful day for our democracy,” declared Nathaly Arriola, executive director of Need to Impeach, whose mission is self-explanatory.
