The Games will be very different this year.

than PCR tests and can come with the potential for false-positive results . That’s why, if someone does test positive or has an inconclusive result with one of these tests, they’ll have to take a PCR test to confirm whether or not they actually have an infection.

The other worry is that testing won’t be able to catch every positive case. “The minute you finish a test, the person may actually be brewing an infection and test positive a short time later,” Dr. Maragakis explains. However, when used in conjunction with other public health measures and with an agreed-upon protocol in place to determine if a positive test is false, regular rapid testing will be an important part of the overall plan to curtail infections, she says.

Unlike in previous years when athletes could take this opportunity to explore a foreign country, this year they’ll only be allowed to visit official Olympic venues, their living space, and other pre-approved locations. Athletes will need to have their temperature taken every time they enter the Olympic Village. They’re encouraged to eat meals at least six feet from others or alone and to keep their mealtime companions to a minimum.

Athletes are also discouraged from using public transportation and must only use official Olympic vehicles to get around . While COVID-19 vaccines are highly encouraged for everyone attending the games, they are not required. If that seems like a lot, that’s because it is. These rules represent the Olympic organizers’ careful attempt to move forward with this massive event while still protecting public safety, and doing so will take the cooperation of everyone at the Games. “We’ve learned a lot about how events can proceed safely,” Dr. Maragakis says. “There is a way that this can happen without causing undue risk.”
