Last month, NATO and E.U. countries all teamed up in a “tanks for Ukraine” drive to supply Kyiv with several battalions of German-made Leopard 2 tanks. The Leopard 2 is the standard battle tank across much of NATO, and one of its trademarks is a gun that stays so steady that it’sBut Canada’s contribution didn’t come off looking all that triumphant. While Canada has about 100 Leopard 2s, almost all of them are undriveable due to years of neglect.
The National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System is something that Ukraine asked for specifically. Ottawa promised to spend $500 million on something for their military, and they responded with a polite requests for a NASAMS. It’s basically a whole fleet of sensors and missile launchers designed to detect and destroy enemy aircraft over a set geographical area.
