The retail giant finally spoke up after receiving a wellspring of backlash on social media.
brought it to attention in an Instagram post on Friday, September 20, which has since sparked outrage and conversation among his 105,000 followers. After receiving a wellspring of backlash, H&M has finally responded to the criticism.
In regards to François's post, which features a photo of the aforementioned ad, he said it's an assessment based on all of his years seeing situations like this happen over and over again. "It's got to stop. This beautiful young girl’s #kinky hair appears to have had very little to no attention yet all of her counterparts have clearly sat in front of someone who was more than capable of styling other hair textures," he writes.
In a new paragraph, he continues: "My heart breaks imagining yet another girl from my community sitting in front of a mirror being ignored by the team around her, left to her own devices because someone didn’t know how to handle her texture." François also points out that the photo would have had to of been seen and approved by at least several people prior to its debut.
Of course, it's impossible to know exactly what the context of the shoot was or how the girl's hair ended up styled this way — nonetheless, most folks are not happy. In response to François's post, fans and fellow artists are leaving messages like, "Thank you for speaking on this!" "This burns me UP! 😡😡😡," and "She is beautiful. She deserved so much better than this.
