So, you're finally thinking about trying that clay mask you've been keeping under your bathroom sink...

But how these oil-absorbing benefits translate into the many claims surrounding clay skin-care products—that it can help with acne, signs of aging, sensitivity, etc.—isn’t totally clear. There’s simply a lack of high-quality studies about whether or not these products can actually help the skin, Dr. Rieder says. And, depending on your specific skin-care concerns, your dermatologist will probably have another option to suggest that has more science behind it, Dr.

And when it comes to all those various types of clay used in skin-care products, Dr. Rieder says they can have some small differences in effects, but the biggest effect you’ll get from any of them is still that good ol’ oil absorption.. But it can serve a role as a complementary step for those who want to try it, Dr. Khetarpal says. Those with oily skin will see the most obvious mattifying benefits, but people with dry and sensitive skin should be more cautious, she explains.

Not only can these masks be overly drying, but they also often contain extra exfoliating or botanical ingredients that can be irritating to dry or sensitive skin. Additionally, those with skin conditions like psoriasis, rosacea, or eczema should probably skip clay masks altogether, Dr. Khetarpal says. Remember, just because something is natural doesn’t automatically mean it’s safe, Dr. Evans cautions. All products featured on SELF are independently selected by our editors.
