The Opening Day second baseman, sent down to Oklahoma City on July 9, has been outplayed by fellow rookie Michael Busch and stuck behind several veterans
LOS ANGELES ― A bobblehead giveaway featuring two players is unusual. That’s even more true when one of the featured players has been in the minor leagues for the better part of two months.
Outman has been a mainstay in the Dodgers’ outfield and figures to get down-ballot consideration for the National League Rookie of the Year award. Meanwhile, Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on July 9 and has been buried on the Dodgers’ depth chart ever since. The expectations were high for Vargas after he made the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster as a second baseman. Manager Dave Roberts said Vargas was considered for a promotion this week, yet he remains in Oklahoma City for a simple reason.Busch was hitting .323 with a .432 on-base percentage and 24 home runs when he was promoted from Triple-A on Aug. 22 to replace injured designated hitter J.D. Martinez. Since then, he has three hits in 24 at-bats.
Vargas has a .303 batting average and .411 OBP in 44 Triple-A games this year, but he did most of his damage early. Before a breakout game Sunday against Round Rock , Vargas had been mired in a 15-game stretch in which he batted .100 with 12 strikeouts in 40 at-bats.
