confirmed to ABC News that 21-year-old Franco Patino was also among the victims, sharing that he was "actively involved in campus life," and was a mechanical engineering technology major with a minor in human movement biomechanics.

Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite told The AP that the surge seemed to happen “all at once,” and the event was ended quickly in efforts to prioritize the safety of the crowd. “Suddenly we had several people down on the ground, experiencing some type of cardiac arrest or some type of medical episode,”As noted by CNN, officials explained during a press conference that the cause of the surge was not promptly clear, and an investigation of the incident is underway.

Lina Hidalgo, county judge of Harris County, called the entire incident “an extremely tragic night,” the. “Our hearts are broken,” Hidalgo added. “People go to these events looking for a good time, a chance to unwind, to make memories — it's not the kind of event you go to where you expect to find out about fatalities.”

In the hours after the incident, Astroworld organizers shared a statement posted to Twitter explaining that the remainder of the festival will be canceled. “Our hearts are with the Astroworld festival family tonight — especially those we lost and their loved ones,” the statement read. “We are focused on supporting local officials however we can. With that in mind, the festival will no longer be held on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, Travis Scott, who is the founder of the festival itself, also released a statement in response to the incident, saying he is "absolutely devastated" about what took place. “My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival,” the rapper wrote. “Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.
