DeWine's visit comes after local officials have pleaded for state support to curb violent crime
On Monday, the Major Cities Chiefs Association, made up of police executives from America’s largest cities, released apainting Cleveland in another unfavorable light. Among 69 participating police departments, Cleveland was one of just four to record rises this year in the four major violent crime groups: homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Cleveland shared that distinction with Memphis, Tennessee; Oakland, California; and Washington, D.C.
Short-term partnership boosts, however, have occurred routinely in Cleveland — something DeWine acknowledged — and it is unclear what makes the current escalation different. Some local officials have hinted at an imbalance among Ohio’s communities, suggesting some state politicians prioritize rural and suburban constituents over city dwellers. Cleveland Councilman Charles Slife has wondered publicly whether race influences decision-making inside the Ohio Statehouse.
