Chelsea Rizzo didn’t grow up hiking. But faced with a period of discontent while she was living in New York City and working as a stylist, she started seeking out activities that would bring joy. She thought back to her first hike a couple of years before—“I remember it very clearly because I was wearing a shearling jacket and jeans; I was grossly underprepared,” she says—and the feeling of elation she got from the challenge. So she started taking the train upstate alone to try new trails.
Allison Levy, a lifelong hiker and also a stylist at the time, had been watching her friend prepare. “I was very envious of the fact that she was going to be really committing to being outside for that long a period of time,” Levy says. “We talked about how the gear that we were buying wasn't really serving us in terms of aesthetics.
