The Old River Heritage Group hopes to save a nearly forgotten language and preserve a culture.

Rutledge believes greater awareness of the ancient language could lead to naming and renaming streets and parks with words from Pajalate. Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, a local Indigenous group, has been preserving Pajalate through ceremonial songs, prayers and lessons for children.

Development of the marker is “not an oppositional kind of situation,” even though the Spanish government and Catholic Church initially used Pajalate to evangelize and settle Texas and northern Mexico, then prohibited the language, Rutledge said. “By 1770, we’ve got the authorities saying, ‘Quit speaking Indigenous languages. Don’t let anybody do it anymore.’ So it is a complex thing we’re trying to do here, and we want to be very mindful as we go forward,” she said.
