The original proved a real handful, especially in the wet, so a Phase 2 model attempted to make it more manageable...The first hot Mégane used a variant of the same engine that powered the Clio RS, only with the addition of turbocharging A cut-price Cup version removed a lot of extras to save weight, although it still ended up heavier than the outgoing 172 model.
A new six-speed gearbox sharpened performance, although it didn't make quite as big a splash as the 182 had done. The effort led to a Nürburgring lap record, but customers didn't really know what to make of it. Renault struggled to sell it at the time, but it has gone on to become a modern classic...power was boosted, although the engine remained naturally aspirated, and visuals were tweaked for added aggression...
While the name stayed the same, underneath the Clio 4 RS 200 completely overhauled the formula Renault Sport had been using for its hot superminis
