The number of homicides in the US rose in the first nine months of 2021 but at a slower pace than the big increase the country saw in 2020
The number of homicides in the United States continued to rise in the first three quarters of 2021, but at a slower pace, one year after a record increase in murders that followed George Floyd's killing, according to the latest quarterly report published Monday by the Council on Criminal Justice.
A study of homicides in 22 cities during the first nine months of this year showed the number of murders was 4% greater than the same period in 2020, with 126 more homicides between January and September, the report says. In the first three quarters of 2020, the number of homicides in the same 22 cities rose by 36% over the same time frame in 2019, according to the report.
