HONG KONG—Hundreds of thousands of protesters began the new year on the streets of Hong Kong, sending a message to authorities that they wouldn’t back down until their demands were met, even as Wednesday’s demonstration ended with hundreds of arrests and scuffles with police.
To the now-familiar scenes, demonstrators—some carrying babies—added a new chant as they marched on Wednesday: “Form unions!” The march remained largely peaceful through the afternoon and had been approved by the city’s police force.
