WASHINGTON - Prospects for progress in U.S.-China trade talks dimmed on Monday after Washington blacklisted Chinese companies over Beijing’s treatment of predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities, and President Donald Trump said a quick trade deal was unlikely.
“We think there’s a chance we could do something very substantial,” Trump said, referring to minister-level talks scheduled for the end of the week. “I would much prefer a big deal and I think that’s what we’re shooting for.” Police in Hong Kong have used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons against pro-democracy demonstrators in the former British colony, which has been plunged into its worst political crisis in decades.
The two sides have been at loggerheads over U.S. demands that China improve protections of American intellectual property, end cybertheft and the forced transfer of technology to Chinese firms, curb industrial subsidies and increase U.S. companies’ access to largely closed Chinese markets. Kudlow told reporters the White House had formed a “study group” to examine investment issues, but said the idea of delisting Chinese firms, reported by Reuters and other media outlets last month, was “not on the table.
