A hotel that mixes Japanese tradition with modern luxury
One of the main reasons to visit Japan is to absorb its traditional culture, and one of the best hotels to experience it in is HOSHINOYA, close to Tokyo’s main station.
Ryokans are Japan’s traditional inns; here, you take off your shoes on entry, eat and sleep on woven tatami mats, and often enjoy communal bathing. HOSHINOYA offers the luxury version, with low, comfy beds, a bathtub so deep you can fully immerse yourself, a mirror that turns into a TV and a separate dressing room to hang up your clothes before changing into your complimentary kimono.After we’d donned our customary attire, it was time to head up to the onsen at the top of the building.
Soak over, and we headed to one of the hotel’s lounges, which are situated at the centre of each floor of guest rooms. Here you can get free tea, coffee and most excitingly, ice creams at any time of day. In the morning there are also rice balls with miso soup on offer for a light breakfast, or you can visit in the evening to grab a small bowl of noodles.
Those who are willing to pay extra, however, can enjoy a multi-course breakfast delivered to their room. Choose between a Japanese breakfast, including grilled salmon, rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables and fruit, or the Western option, which includes an omelette, vegetables, salad, yoghurt and pastries.There is also a restaurant downstairs, which has a seasonal menu focusing on the best quality produce, led by chef Noriyuki Hamada.
