As of writing, Mattel is developing 45 movies based on their toys and other properties, including Daniel Kaluuya's Barney the Dinosaur and a Magic 8 Ball film. One of these movies is Hot Wheels, which has filmmaker J.J. Abrams attached as a producer.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that, due to the success of Barbie, Warner Bros. is currently seeking a director for the Hot Wheels movie. The adaptation, which Abrams has reportedly described as "emotional and grounded and gritty," also doesn't have a script written yet. However, it appears Warner Bros. is pushing for the race car film to be their next movie based on a Mattel property.
What Will A Hot Wheels Movie Look Like? Barbie managed to pay homage to the classic Mattel doll while also poking fun at some elements of the franchise. The movie also made heavy use of feminist comedy, in particular criticizing patriarchal ideas and social norms. Much like how Barbie was an homage to the brand while also poking fun at it, Hot Wheels could do something similar with its own version.
Given Abrams' comments about a grounded and emotional Hot Wheels movie, though, the movie's premise could be presented at face value. Instead of being a comedy like Barbie, Hot Wheels could instead tell a captivating, realistic story using cars from the brand's namesake. While the idea of Hot Wheels being rooted in reality negates a possible Fast & Furious homage, it could provide a dramatic tale that surprises audiences with its presentation.
However, without a director or a script, Abrams' current vision for Hot Wheels could change once production begins. If the movie's intention remains the same, though, then it could end up being a high-octane film maintaining a basis in reality. It will be clearer what the Hot Wheels movie looks like once it's farther into its now-prioritized production.
