Three Houston-area facilities top ‘most excessive’ polluters in Texas list
The Environmental Integrity Project accuses the TCEQ of failing to take effective enforcement actions against facilities that it says too often pollute the air in Harris County and harm the health of residents. It’s relatively rare for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which regulates pollution in the state, to classify emissions as “excessive.
The CPChem and Exxon facilities reported an average of roughly one illegally large pollution incident per month during the six-year period of the study, the nonprofit said, resulting in more than 4.4 million pounds and 3 million pounds, respectively, of pollution being released into the air.
"We are continuously optimizing our processes to minimize emissions, improve air quality and maintain the highest standards for environmental care," it said in a statement.
