The University of Texas Medical Branch researchers were still observing those students when the pandemic struck in 2020, creating a new research opportunity. "We’ll be able to do that in a really unique way because we serendipitously had this data from before the pandemic," he said."So we can actually see the effects the pandemic had on these kids."
Temple said he was interested to find out whether the program has helped mitigate the negative effects from the pandemic on students by arming them with better coping skills. The study includes a diverse group of 2,500 adolescents in southeast Texas. The participants were in seventh grade when the study began, and they will be three years out of high school by the time it concludes, Temple said.
