Houston rains bringing floods reminiscent of Hurricane Harvey, officials urge residents to take shelter
The fourth-largest city in America is bracing for storms Thursday night that could bring even more flooding to a region that has been saturated during the last week. Houston officials have emergency vehicles staged for anticipated flooding not seen since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, which was one of the greatest rain events in the country’s history.
“Look at this flooding in Sugar Land. They saw 8 inches of rain in 4 hours. To give you perspective, the city saw the same amount of rain in 3 days during Harvey,” Maria Carter of ABC 13 tweeted.“Houston Police have officers, aircraft, boats and high water rescue vehicles staged and ready to respond to anyone needing help tonight. We hope they don't have to.
Lessons learned during Harvey have officials on high alert when floods threaten the low-lying Bayou City. The city also asks for residents to stay off the roads Thursday night, and to not put themselves at risk.
