The crew will reach the International Space Station Monday morning, helping the company fine-tune its space operations while giving another country access to microgravity., who holds a U.S. record for 665 cumulative days in space, endurance motorsports racer John Shoffner, Saudi fighter pilot Ali Alqarni and Saudi biomedical researcher Rayyanah Barnawi.Barnawi was to be the first Arab woman to orbit the Earth.
This is Whitson’s fourth trip into space, and she’s been offering advice to her crewmates. One particularly important tidbit: Slow is fast. The crew will spend eight days on the International Space Station. The stay originally had been planned for 10 days, but it was shortened to conform to the station’s busy schedule.. Their projects range from stem cell research to cloud seeding to testing sensors that detect odors in the space station.
“To see their faces when they see astronauts from their own region for the first time,” Barnawi said, “is very thrilling.” Shoffner started a business, forming Dura-Line Corp., during the early days of fiber optic telecommunications. His company developed and patented multiple processes for the placement of fiber optic cable during the 1980s.
The Ax-2 crew has spent hundreds of hours training for the mission, with some of their lessons prompted by the Ax-1 mission.
