A roaring 20s-style extravaganza on March 18 officially kicks off a season of festivities

“It’s a welcoming place,” says Cissy Segall Davis, who has been managing director of Miller since 2008. “Everything here is designed for people from all walks of life to be comfortable. Nothing here says, ‘no no no you don’t belong.’ You can bring your own food, sit on the hill, if your kids get antsy, feel free to leave. There’s not that huge monetary investment that you would be angry that you would feel if you had to leave. Miller is a magnet.
Though the theater re-opens March 17 with a St. Patrick's Day-themed event with the Trinity Irish Dance Company, the official centenary celebration will begin on March 18 with a roaring’20s-themed party that includes a jazz performance by the band Hot Sardines, swing dancing lessons, a seven-foot birthday cake sculpture to take photos with, and cars from the era.
“I think this is the thing that makes America the strongest,” says executive director Tim Fried-Fiori, “I’ve traveled all over the world, and Houston is the more diverse place I’ve ever been. The more people, the more ideas, the more culture, the more you bring together, the richer the stew. You just don’t get that at other places.”Express performs in everything from concert halls to the waiting room at Texas Children’s Hospital.
