The education advocacy and research nonprofit has been ranking Texas public schools for nearly 20 years, primarily using state standardized math and reading test scores, as well as high school achievement data to grade campuses.
Elementary and middle schools are graded upon three metrics: raw student achievement, achievement relative to poverty levels, and year-over-year student growth. The nonprofit recently released its rankings for the 2021-22 school year. Across the Houston region, 667 schools improved from last year, while 627 performed worse than last year. The Houston region's total score average for 2022 was 50.7, up from 49.8 in 2019. Harmony Public Schools was ranked the top district for elementary, middle and high school students in the 2021-22 school year.
