Inflation is an unwanted guest, but Houstonians embrace Thanksgiving
Elizabeth Conley/Staff photographerBelen Lagunas, a cleaner and cook who lives in Houston, has noticed the impact of rising prices while shopping for groceries lately. Meat; milk; bread; eggs -- everything seems to cost more affected, putting a strain on her budget.
Still, she is determined to put on a feast for this week’s Thanksgiving holiday. It’s the first major holiday since her grandson was born, in September, and she wants her son and his wife to feel supported. So rather than scaling back on Thanksgiving planning, Lagunas has ramped up her hours at work to cover the costs. She did the same, she recalled, for her two daughters, to raise money for their quinceañeras.
as rising prices affect nearly all standards, from turkeys to stuffing to pie crusts, according to the Texas Farm Bureau. To feed a gathering of 10, Texans will spend an average of $58.51, up from $53.51 a year ago. If it's any consolation, the costs here have not risen as quickly as they have nationally. The average cost of Thanksgiving meal in the United States jumped 20 percent to $64.05 from $53.31 a year ago, according to the American Farm Bureau.
