This is supposed to be a Mother’s Day story. It is not that, exactly. It’s more a family story, of the sacrifices and love that helped Dane Dunning become the...
“I absolutely love it,” Dunning said in a recent social media post explaining his tattoos. “I’m away from family for so long. Every time I see my tattoo it just makes me think of family and brings a little bit of home with me. It gives me a little satisfied feeling to know that they are always there with me.”
“My parents always put us first,” Dunning said. “I want to do the same thing when it comes to my child. We want to put everything we can into our child and make sure that he has the best life possible and be set up for great success the way my parents did. They pushed us and they loved us and they let us know the importance of hard work.”
You start to raise a child on an enlisted man’s salary, and the money goes fast. Try to raise two and the debt piles up. When child number three, Dane, came along six years later, they were already swimming upstream financially. John, who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan in separate tours of duty, was faced with a choice: Uproot his family or temporarily uproot himself again by taking a private military contracting job in Saudi Arabia. It would significantly help the family’s financial situation, but it also meant leaving behind their youngest, Dane, the “happy-go-lucky” kid who was entering high school with a blossoming baseball future.
Said Misu: “We did the best we could. There were some hard times at that point, but [Dane] helped me and I helped him.”Misu found herself working two jobs while navigating baseball tournament schedules to the best of her ability. Then she would spend weekends cleaning the law office of a family friend. On that project, she had help: Dane.
“Where I grew up, the lifestyle and culture were different,” Misu said. “The husband was expected to handle everything. I had a lot of learning to do. But it’s what had to be done.”Said Dane: “It was hard for her as an Asian woman. Most people have their own friend groups. When I was in Little League, we’d have these get-togethers, and she was the outlier. People were friendly, but it’s not the same. It was awkward.
