Scream 5 proved how serious it was about breaking the rules when it killed off Dewey Riley. However, he might be able to return in Scream 7.
Scream 5 doesn't have to be the end of Dewey Riley in the Scream franchise, as he could still return for Scream 7. Legacy characters are typically off-limits, which is why Gale Weathers and Dewey made it through every Ghostface killing from the first Scream through the fourth. While Gale's continued to survive, recently appearing in Scream 6, Dewey was sadly murdered in the fifth film, and David Arquette didn't return for the role in the franchise's sixth installment.

However, just because a Scream character appears dead doesn't mean they are. Billy Loomis, Roman Bridger, and Quinn Bailey have all faked their own deaths in the Scream movies.
Dewey Could Appear In Flashbacks In Scream 7 Arquette is open to returning to the Scream franchise as he loved being a part of the movies and working with the cast. However, bringing him back to life would create too many plotholes and would wear out an overused trick. A better option would be if Dewey returned in flashbacks. Since Gale is still alive and likely not fully over Dewey's death, Scream 7 could utilize flashbacks to bring Dewey back and explore his past relationship with Gale.
Flashbacks could dive into this story while also helping Gale heal and move on. While Gale did have a boyfriend in Scream 6, he was quickly killed off, and by the way, she was unaffected, it's likely she's not over Dewey at all. The flashbacks could also offer crucial information on how to fight off Ghostface or maybe even hints at their identity.
Dewey Could Follow Randy's Scream 3 Appearance Since the Scream 7 requel lines up with Scream 3, the film could use something Randy did after his death. Randy died in Scream 2, but since he was known for his rule lists on how to survive the killings, he appeared in Scream 3 via a video he filmed before his death in case he didn't survive. This would be a great way to bring Dewey back into the film without a bizarre and confusing storyline about his death being fake.
