How did they lure Coach Prime, one of the best defensive backs in NFL history, to Boulder, where Sanders had no personal or professional ties?
BOULDER — The new nameplate sat at the front of Rick George’s desk, a boss’ place of honor. As the sun began its slow descent behind the Flatirons this past Friday afternoon, the passing rays through the giant office window hit the plate’s seven gold letters just right, giving the title an almost glowing, ethereal shine.
Yet Sanders’ name kept popping back up. In addition to the services of the Texas-based search firm Eastman & Bodine, George consulted regularly with a small committee composed of Buffs’ football alums and partisans. To that end, he asked four friends in early October to make direct pitches to Sanders on the Buffs’ behalf: former NFL linebacker and businessman Shawne Merriman; ex-NFL wideout/former Utah star Steve Smith; ex-Florida State defensive back, Rhodes Scholar and neurosurgeon Myron Rolle; and former Broncos wideout Brandon Marshall.
For Sanders, who values relationships and trust, the amount of loyal and reliable voices from different corners, all stumping for CU, both opened his eyes and gave him pause. It’s a small world in football circles — and the more George and Sanders talked, the more their worlds intersecting made sense to both sides. They talked football. Faith. Family. Baseball. They compared World Series scars.“ met somebody that was as profound, that was as passionate and as caring, that stood on morals … and he will not stop until he’s accomplished all that he set out to accomplish against adversity. Simultaneously.
While the NCAA had mandated transfers sitting out a year, CU’s credits policy was a procedural, but largely moot, point — new Buffs could make up the academic work during their “gap” year to ensure future eligibility. Last month, the chancellor said, a proposal designated to help ease that process, birthed by Jill Keegan, CU’s Senior Women’s Administrator; Kris Livingston, Executive Senior Associate AD; and Joe Jupille, CU’s Faculty Athletics Representative, was approved.
