On Oct. 19, Rudy’s officially reopened its Hollis Street location for what the crew hopes is a lasting encore filled with familiar breakfast hits and lunchtime bangers that have made the beloved diner a warm place to kick back with a cold beer or hot cup of coffee since the early aughts.
Smith told SFGATE that he was originally part of the former ownership that was ready to sell Rudy’s, which also included Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt. But when Rivera and Ortiz made an offer, Smith knew this was the best shot the cafe had at a comeback. “When we were working, some people would jump in the door and ask us when we were going to reopen,” Ortiz said. “They’re happy and excited.”
The Rudy’s Can’t Fail name was inspired by The Clash song “Rudie Can’t Fail,” so it’s fitting many of the diner’s menu items are also nods to punk rock, such as the Rude N’ Reckless breakfast plate, which plays on lyrics from the song.
