Only 15% of the video game industry is female. Girls Make Games is trying to change that:
Founder Laila Shabir explained via a phone interview how the organization started as a result of her having difficulty recruiting women game developers.
It was from there that Shabir started to realize that the shortage of women game developers might be, in part, from girls not being presented with game development as a possible career at an early age. The first summer camp for Girls Make Games in 2014 was something of a social experiment, according to Shabir. It was one way to gauge potential interest in game development from young girls.
“The camp became a place that the girls called home,” Shabir said. “We had parents writing, telling us things like, ‘My daughter came home [from the camp] and said,Girls Make Games is currently holding its 2019 Summer Camps. At Girls Make Games, it’s a non-issue since all campers are girls.
Choi, who is an incoming freshman in computer science at Brown University, also said that her high school counselor never discussed game development as a potential career and that she didn’t know it was an option before—which doesn’t surprise Shabir.
