Shock and devastation spread Tuesday among educators across the Houston region and state in the immediate wake of a mass shooting at an Uvalde elementary school that resulted in the deaths of 19 children and 2 adults.

Police at Houston ISD, the state's largest school system, were"evaluating safety measures on our campuses and will adjust accordingly," Superintendent Millard House II said. There were no current threats, he added. "The only thing that could break our hearts further is to allow these .. beautiful souls to become yet another set of numbers in someone’s stats folder," Capo said in a statement. Nineteen"children will never graduate. A teacher won’t go home again. Countless others are wounded for the rest of their lives. Now is the time for change."
In the meantime, Conroe, Spring and other area districts said they plan to increase police presence in response to the shooting. Spring is also banning backpacks thru the end of the school year.Aldine, Spring and Spring Branch ISDs made similar statements.
